Global Initiative on Political Finance Transparency Launched

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA), and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), with the support of the Government of Norway, have launched a global initiative to combat corruption and enhance political finance transparency.

The initiative aims to support the implementation of Resolution 11/7, “Preventing and Combating Corruption through Enhancing Transparency in the Funding of Political Parties, Candidatures for Elected Public Office and Electoral Campaigns,” adopted in December 2025. The initiative will support countries in strengthening their legal frameworks and the capacity of institutions responsible for political finance oversight.

As part of the initiative, an international network of political finance oversight bodies and anti-corruption agencies will be established. Election management bodies, election tribunals, supreme audit institutions, law enforcement agencies and financial intelligence units are also expected to be engaged. Particular attention will be given to strengthening inter-agency cooperation and information sharing to prevent, detect and investigate political finance violations.

UNODC, International IDEA and IFES will also provide countries with tailored technical assistance upon request and develop a methodology to assess national systems against the standards set out in Resolution 11/7.

By the end of 2026, two regional events are planned under the initiative – in Panama and Nairobi. Participants will examine the implementation of Resolution 11/7 in regional contexts, identify gaps, and develop practical solutions and plans for further cooperation and capacity building. These events are expected to lay the groundwork for expanding the programme in 2027 and beyond.
